Tom Kowalski on WDFN: Southern California's Taylor Mays could be answer for Lions' top pick
With months to go, a lot is going to change in terms of the NFL draft. But MLive Insider Tom "Killer" Kowalski sees someone the Detroit Lions should take a long look at before making a final decision with their top overall pick: Southern California junior safety Taylor Mays.
The hard-hitting Mays has yet to announce whether he'll be forfeiting his senior season, but Kowalski thinks he could be fit the mold of the Indianapolis Colts' Bob Sanders or Pittsurgh Steelers Troy Polamalu.
I understand that a great safety on a horse crap defense isn't going to get you very far, he admits to WDFN-AM's Sean Baligian on It Is What It Is. But that's one of the pieces of the puzzle: if you can get that guy who can blitz, who can play the run, who can play short zones, who can play centerfield.
I'm telling you, if I was the Lions – and we got months to go to see how this thing sorts out and which guys climb to the top ... but right now, if I was the Lions, I would have to look at Taylor Mays. And I would not discount him just because a safety hasn't been taken No. 1 overall.
